Two weeks ago at Sonrise - our Teaching Pastor, Scott Greene shared a great message on Rest (The Sabbath Commandment). He preached it so well - that I decided to practice it this week! I'm resting ... with my wife ... in the Florida sun!Rest is part of the "rhythm of life" - God rested on the seventh day ... Jesus rested and encouraged his disciples to do the same. (see Matthew 11:28-30)
In his message, Scott made the point that "Rest Renews Relationships" - I had never thought of it quite like that - and I remembered that line - because it is true!
When we are tired - our relationships are strained. When we rest, we give space for our relationships to rebuild - with God and with one another!
So - this week my wife Kathy and I have notched out some time to rest - in the warmth of the Florida sunshine - we actually planned this several months ago. I've discovered that if I don't plan seasons of "rest" - they won't happen! We have to plan them daily, weekly, and annually. I like the "formula" I first heard from Rick Warren on this ...
- Abandon Annually (Set Apart Times to Get Away Each Year)
- Withdraw Weekly (Take a Day Off Each Week)
- Divert Daily (Spend some Quiet Time Each Day)
Every day I seek to get some "alone time" - every week I take Monday off! When we return home - we will resume our "work" - with renewed energy for life and for relationships. We will also continue to practice a pattern of rest. I suggest you do the same.
What is your day of rest? When is your next planned "abandonment"?

Stan, glad you are getting this chance. If I look at Rick's schedule, I am missing the "Withdraw Weekly". I am able to find some quiet time in the morning and with our kids still in school, the planned "abandonment" will be on Spring Break this year. Chris and I try to get away for a day or two on our own and we are planning to attend the BC Experience in Bend, OR, in October...But, it IS that withdraw weekly that gets me. In the business of real estate (especially slow real estate) I tend to work at the customer's schedule. This included Sunday Open Houses that really just wreck the day on Sunday...I need to ponder on this one a bit. That is great that you take Mondays off. ENjoy the rest of your time in FL. I will be shoveling heavy snow for the third time this season!!
