Extravagant Generosity

I love to give things away! Sometimes it gets me in trouble - but I just love to give things away!

There is something that happens in me when I practice "extravagant generosity" - I think it is something good - in fact, I think it is something close to the heart of God!

I first heard this term, "extravagant generosity" from Bishop Robert Schnase who spoke about this at our recent Indiana Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and also writes about this in his books, "Five Practices of Fruitful Living" and "Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations"

The apostle Paul notes this about the "extravagant generosity" of even those who struggle ...

The trial exposed their true colors: They were incredibly happy, though desperately poor.

The pressure triggered something totally unexpected:

an outpouring of pure and generous gifts.”

- 2 Corinthians 8:2 (The Message)

This is the spiritual math:

JOY + Poverty = Generosity!

Generosity is a response to the heart of God!

Jesus said it this way .... “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also!” (Matt 6:21)

(So - Generosity is matter of your heart – not your wealth!)

Truth is ... we can't out-give God and when we give we become more like Him!

I love being generous ... and I want to be more like Christ! So I'm going to keep giving things away! It is good for my soul!

P.S.

It is good for your soul too - so practice some "extravagant generosity" today!

so fun to give a $15 dollar tip on a $17 bill the other day! Your message inspired this tipper (as a former waitress I'm not a bad tipper anyway) to be over the top generous since that message. Thanks for reminding us to live this way.
